Benedict doesn't mean "good sayings"

Much as I like his hat, the pope needs some work as the servant of the servants of God. He may have been quoting a 14th century religious scholar, but his remarks about Islam were decidedly not very helpful in today's world. So much for humility.I think it is safe to say that his point about peaceful religion was lost.

Yes, he's quite a provocative little pope, isn't he? A few weeks ago, he said publicly that Canada was going to hell in a hand basket because of same-sex marriage and liberal abortion laws. . . .

There was also a question of whether or not he could be extradited to Texas, because he was a presiding bishop who reassigned a known sexual predator priest to several different parishes back in the 1980's.

There is a big difference between religion and faith. And the gap widens daily

I for one am stunned that he said it. And even more stunned that he is surprised he spoke out of turn.

But, then again...he ain't the last pope now is he

Nope

JP II was a hard act to follow, but this guy isn't even close. I didn't really expect much from a (former?) Nazi.

Bill Maher said the other night that Muslims are listening to what he says more than most Catholics.

I mostly missed the pope's visit here in Munich - and for that part his hat too - although he drove by only a few hundred meters from our place.

I was surprised, that one statement of him would create such mayhem in the world. And I don't think that he spoke out of turn - he cited an old emperor to start a discussion. Maybe it wasn't helpful and could be misinterpreted; but it's hardly an excuse for the reactions.
And somehow I have the feeling that those extreme reactions are always coming from the same people. But at least they don't leave any room for misinterpretation. It's usually clear what you mean if you fire a gun or throw a grenade.

notsocranky yankee: Saying that Benedikt was/is a Nazi seems to be a strange remark to make - esp. as it is mostly false. Building your opinion about people from tabloid's headlines doesn't seem to be a good idea.
