beginning to show

I popped the top button off my pants today. I've never been so happy to gain weight. The first OB appointment is next Tuesday, and I admit I'm looking forward to it more than Christmas. I just hope that I can hold my tummy in long enough to keep my job for next year. Though legally no employer can discriminate based on pregnancy, it's got to be a factor in the back of any principal's mind, if not an excuse to scrutinize other areas more carefully.

I wonder: is there no guarantee for you to get your job again after you have taken your leave? Here in good old Germany, moms are guaranteed by law to get their old or an equivalent job back for two years after child birth.

It's a very very different world from maternity leave in Germany. Here, many jobs only allow you to take off eight weeks of unpaid leave beginning the day you go into labor. Most teaching jobs are a little more understanding, but it is still economically and socially discouraged for moms (or dads, for that matter) to stay home with new babies.
