teaching tolerance
How can an educated man smoothly transition from plesantly conversing about Elie Wiesel's Night to irately declaring that we should "admit" that the war in Iraq is a Holy War. When he began pontificating about those people who believe in a religion of violence and whose minds can't be changed, I politely excused myself.

I think that's part of the answer to the question how an uneducated man could become the president of one of the most powerful countries in the world.
You're made of stronger stuff than me. I would have reamed him a new one.
The question as to how he could switch like that is simple, though: people who are willing to shout about the monsters inside others can rarely see the monster inside themselves.
