easy target

Many of my liberal friends out there have blogged great paragraphs of patronizing regarding Cheney's happy trigger finger. I'm not with you on this one.

Embarrassing, yes. Tragic, yes. Yet another reminder that the White House is slippery and unreliable when it comes to informing the public, yes. Anything new or worthy of mockery? Eh. (a midwesterner's way of saying no politely)

Guns are scary and evil. I don't see anything wrong with hunting, though. It's a hell of a lot more effective than keeping the deer population down through auto accidents. Birds--not my thing, but Cheney and I don't have much in common. Mostly I just see this incident as a really bad accident, like reading about how a legislator collided into a motorcyclist on the freeway.

For topics worth poking fun at, I'd rather write about Amitai Sandy, an artist from Israel who masterminded the contest for the best anti-Semitic cartoon--drawn by a Jew. That shows chutzpa.

He described an example of his own "anti-Israeli" art that responded to the crisis of defining a Palestinian state and Jews' own mixed feelings on the subject. Apparently, it was not uncommon for someone driving down the street to see another Israeli and yell out the defamation: "You F--- with Arabs!" So he drew a picture of a fair-skinned girl holding hands with a dark-skinned boy. The caption read, "Yes! I f--- with an Arab."

I love the strength and humor Sandy shows by turning such a sad series of insults and racism on its head. We'll see if the winners get reprinted.

Killing creatures for fun is wrong. If your doing it to feed yourself & your family, fine. If you hunting for commercial gain and your hunting successful species in a well managed way, fine. But if your killing creatures for kicks then I consider you a perverted sicko. If your then stupid enough to shoot one of your sicko buddies by mistake then I'm gonna mock.
And if your the Vice president of the USA, first reserve to the most powerful position in the world, and it turn out you get your kicks killing harmless defenceless birds & your also a dumbarse with a gun then I'm gonna mock a lot.

I agree with you here, "eh". There is so much to be disgusted by right now, that this doesn't really seem to matter. I'm annoyed by the way so many of the liberal blogs have run with this in the same way that Rush Limbaugh and his ilk used to run with every stupid anti-Clinton meme they could find. Oh well. I guess that's their job.

What Cheney was doing was not hunting.

It was shooting birds. There was no sportsmanlike pursuit here. When the description of the event starts with "We got out of our car," and ends with a guy getting shot a few minutes later, it's not a hunt.

The ranch where these loahtesome creatures were shooting is designed to be a haven for wild migratory birds. The land near the road is specially groomed to be attractive to quail, food is plentiful, and predators are kept out. Bird population is closely monitored, so that when these rich fucks go out, they know exactly where the birds are. They drive to the spot, get out and shoot as much as they want, then go back to the ranch for dinner.

This isn't hunting. This is controlled killing for fun.

At least these birds were wild. You may recall that Cheney got into a bit of a PR flak for 'hunting' on a 'farm' in PA a few years back. At this place, hundreds of birds raised in captivity are released from under a platform where these arrogant shootists sit. It's almost impossible to miss them. Something like 400 birds were killed that day, with Cheney's take being around 70.

I'm not a big fan of hunting, but I don't have much of a problem with people who go out into the wilderness and actually track (or hide for hours in a blind) in pursuit of prey, then clean and carry the carcass back. That's one thing.

What that lame excuse for a human being Cheney did is not hunting. It is a pale shadow of that experience.

Balloon Pirate makes a good point about the state of hunting here in Texas. I agree wholeheartedly that sitting in a blind waiting for the animals you've been feeding all year isn't hunting - it's harvesting. Sadly it seems that the only thing many Texans want to hunt (using the word's real meaning) is Mexicans, er... I mean terrorists, sneaking over the border.

i don't understand why wolf blitzer devoted an entire situation room last night to this stupidness. so he shot someone...big deal.

what i don't understand is how did it happen. aren't secret service guys supposed to see when someone approaches?

They protect the Veep from other people, not other people from the veep. I guess they're on their own.

BP said it best when he called it "controlled killing for fun".

The really pitiful part of this is that Cheney and company did not even conduct this controlled hunting/killing debacle in a safe manner. How do you accidentally shoot a person rather than a small bird at close range?

It also shows how Cheney feels he is above the law. He did not have the bird stamp on his hunting license and sent a check in for it after the accident. When the police came to the scene, the Secret Service kept them from talking to Cheney. What was he hiding?

I think the whole incident speaks volumes about Cheney's character. That is the issue and Americans need to think about it. But yes, we don't need to go on and on about it either.

And sadly, no comments about anti-Semitism. Oh well.

OMR, you make me laugh. Even when I disagree with you, I'm laughing and shaking my head.

BP, you've inspired me to write about car camping.

James, I don't understand how anyone can bear to live in your state.

Colleen & notso, Yep.

as little as I care for Junior, I think the press is way out of bounds trying to make a story out of something that was just an unfortunate accident.

I decided to turn down Dicks invitation to go hunting too *L*

Cheney shooting a man is dull news and exposes the left's vulgarity and cheapness.

There are more things out there.
